Husky Safari

Living the Musher Dream
For many of our clients, a genuine wilderness husky safari is quite simply a dream come true. Taking control of your team of dogs and heading out into the vast winter landscapes is about as far as you can get from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

The excitement builds as you prepare for departure, the contrasting howls and whines of the dogs is deafening and when they first set off yelping and barking like the hounds of hell you may well think “how on earth am I going to control this lot?” Fear not, they soon settle into a steady rhythm and the barking abates to be replaced by a contented panting.

Huskies are born and bred to run and pull and they live for the moment the brake is released and they speed off along the snowy trails. They know exactly what they are doing, each one has a role in the team and is trained to fulfill that role. Your job is to become an effective contributor to the team. The longer you travel with your team the better your understanding becomes but watch out for those somewhat disdainful looks if you fail to push off on the upward slopes.

It doesn’t matter where you are in the north, Finland, Sweden or Norway, the landscapes are invariably beautiful and the sense of adventurous isolation is only heightened as you cross vast frozen lakes and negotiate the trickier paths that lead through the snowbound forests. Near perfect silence is always your companion on any husky safari broken only by steady panting and the almost hypnotic “swish, swish” of your sled’s runners breaking through the snow.

You will be responsible for the care of your team of huskies. That means ensuring that they are fed (chopping up frozen meat with an axe is not something you experience every day) and watered when you break the trail at the end of the day. True to the spirit of mushing adventure holidays, overnight stays are in simple but cosy wilderness cabins which generally have no showers, indoor WC or electricity. However, you can relax in some style while dinner is cooking on an open fire as a sauna is usually available…...in the North, you steam clean!

Breakfasts and dinners are prepared together. Lunches are eaten by open fires on the trail if weather permits. Given the isolated location of these safaris there is also a strong chance of seeing the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) and with no light pollution whatsoever the Arctic firmament may provide a picture show that will remain imprinted in your mind forever.

Living the dog musher’s dream, it’s an experience you will never, ever forget.
